Numerical modeling of a table-top tunable Smith-Purcell Terahertz free-electron laser operating in the superradiant regime

چکیده
Terahertz (THz) radiation occupies a very large portion of the electromagnetic spectrum and has generated much recent interest due to its ability to penetrate deep into many organic materials without the damage associated with ionizing radiation such as x-rays. One path for generating copious amount of tunable narrowband THz radiation is based on the Smith-Purcell free-electron laser (SPFEL) effect. In this Letter we propose a simple concept for a compact two-stage tunable SPFEL operating in the superradiant regime capable of radiating at the fundamental bunching frequency. We demonstrate its capabilities and performances via computer simulation using the conformal finite-difference time-domain electromagnetic solver vorpal.

متن کاملTunable radiation source by coupling laser-plasma-generated electrons to a periodic structure.
Near-infrared radiation around 1000 nm generated from the interaction of a high-density MeV electron beam, obtained by impinging an intense ultrashort laser pulse on a solid target, with a metal grating is observed experimentally. Theoretical modeling and particle-in-cell simulation suggest that the radiation is caused by the Smith-Purcell mechanism. The results here indicate that tunable terah...
متن کاملFirst Demonstration of a Slippage-dominant Superradiant Free-electron Laser Amplifier
We report the first experimental demonstration of a slippagedominant superradiant free-electron laser (FEL) using an ultrafast seed-laser pulse. We measured the evolution of the longitudinal phase space in the slippage-dominant superradiant regime. With a roughly 1% variation in the electron beam energy, we observed a seed-like fully longitudinal coherence, and a 2% wavelength shift from the se...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Smith-purcell Free Electron Lasers
We present a one-dimensional time-dependent analysis and simulation of Smith-Purcell (SP) free-electron lasers (FELs). The coupled Maxwell-Lorentz equations are set up, and the details of numerical simulation are presented. At low electron beam energy, a SP-FEL is a backward wave oscillator (BWO), and oscillations can be achieved without the need for feedback mirrors. In the linear regime, we s...
